Whitening before braces? Help!!

Hello,

I'm getting my braces on in about a month(so excited!). I was just wondering, would it matter or have any effect if i whitened my teeth before i got my braces on? And when I mean whiten im talking about using the strips. Would love to hear all of your opinions! Thanks!

Yes, do NOT bleach your teeth before! They will glue down the brackets onto the surface of your teeth, and the whitening fibers will attach with it. Yes, your teeth will get darker if you have it for over 1 year. But it depends how well you take care of them (floss, brush). There is really no point of whitening them before; wouldn't you want perfect teeth all the way when your braces come off?

You're best to see your dentist/hygienist for a clean and then keep the usual staining away by using a whitening toothpaste.

Whitening after treatment is finished might be more desirable, as you will be able to appreciate seeing your teeth looking amazing!

Just whiten your teeth once your braces are removed, once your braces are installed you have to double the care to your teeth always floss and brush your teeth to prevent them from getting yellowish

Patients who are getting orthodontic treatment often have crooked teeth which will need to be rotated or repositioned into the proper orientation in order to achieve a nice smile and a functional bite. Some tooth surfaces, prior to treatment, may not be sufficiently exposed due to severe dental crowding. Therefore, tooth whitening agents may not be able to reach all areas of a tooth with equal efficiency.

It doesn't mean that one can not go ahead and whiten teeth prior to orthodontics. But, there are certain considerations in doing so. Please consult with your Orthodontist before doing any further action. :)
