Getting Dental Braces On Twice

Have braces on multiple times is not as rare as you might think.  In many cases, teenagers get braces on and then later in their adult life they find they are in need of braces again.

There are many reasons braces can be needed a second time in one’s lifetime.  The most common reason is not wearing the retainers post braces treatment.  The retainers are a mod of your teeth right when the braces come off.  You are told to wear them all day every day for several months to a year as soon as your braces come off.  If you miss a month or lose your retainers, there is a good chance you will not be able to fit back into them, as your teeth have moved too much.

In other rare cases, an adult may find that their jaw has grown since a teenager causing the bite to be off.  This is common as most teenagers’ jaws don’t stop growing until late teens and early twenties.

There are also cases where the wisdom teeth come in and impact all the teeth around them causing crowding.  The wisdom teeth lay in the back of the mouth and are generally best to take out as they are hard to keep clean and well maintained.

If you are considering getting braces on for the second or even third time, know that you are not alone.
