How old do you have to be to get braces?

If you are considering getting braces for your child or yourself than you will have to consult with an orthodontist.  The age for children to jump into braces sometimes starts as early as 8 years old.  In some instances where a child may have a bad bite issue or severe crowding, it is good to have them in braces as early as possibly to help reduce the severity of the case.

While getting braces early can be a plus, it is also reported than several users may get braces on again later in life if they experience more jaw growth and movement.  Or even worse don’t wear their retainers as most teenagers tend to slack on.  If you are a parent of a child who just got braces off, you must stress the importance of retainers and life after braces.  The retainers act to hold the teeth into place just as well as the braces moved them there.

The average age of children in braces generally is about 12 years old.  You will see middle school children the most in braces as they like to have them off before starting high school.
