How To Reduce Swelling After Removing a Wisdom Tooth?
Wisdom teeth won't always result in the need for dental treatment. Most people will have their wisdom tooth coming in perfectly without being impacted. These lucky people will need no extraction, and they will barely notice their teeth emerging. However, others may have wisdom teeth that become impacted - that is, they get stuck in the process of emerging, and are unable to surface properly. You don’t have to get a wisdom tooth removed, and an impacted wisdom tooth will not always involve pain. However, your dentist will recommend that you get your impacted wisdom tooth removed to avoid any complications later.
Once you have gone through an extraction, you may expect some amount of pain and swelling. The area may feel inflamed, and sensitive to the touch. Here are some quick fixes that can help you soothe the area while the painkillers take effect, or between painkillers.
To quickly fix a swelling or a pain, cool it down with an ice cube. This will help numb your nerve endings and blood vessels.
If using an ice cube inside the mouth is testy, try a cooling pad (this is just like a heating pad that uses electricity to radiate to various temperatures) or a simple, yet effective ice pack.
You can also use other ingenious methods, like using frozen vegetables like corn, peas and chopped carrots. These are actually better than ice cubes because they can store lower temperatures within them than ice can. Besides it's easier too mould a piece of carrot into your mouth to provide relief from the inflammation that it is with an ice cube.
If you're not into natural methods of dealing with the pain, discuss pain relief with your dentist. There's no need to be embarrassed about confiding your fear of pain – be honest with your dentist and he will suggest and prescribe anti-inflammatory medications and painkillers for you. Also, watch out for any pus coming out from the extraction site. If you do notice pus formation, consult your dentist and he will prescribe a course of antibiotics. This helps reduce the chances of an infection.
