What is malocclusion?
It is an orthodontic concern where the alignment of teeth on upper jaw and lower jaw is not proper so there is no good bite (the teeth of upper jaw don’t fall on the respective ones of the lower jaw) when the mouth is closed. If occlusion is referred to as perfect bite in orthodontics the malocclusion is imperfect bite. The malocclusion is treated by orthodontics with motive of bringing the bite to almost near perfect with the use of several appliances called braces.
Classification of Bite or Malocclusion
There are a certain conditions where malocclusion is classified as simple class I. Although, the bite is proper there is still overcrowding of teeth due to extra teeth or crooked teeth. This condition will hamper normal brushing in turn resulting in poor dental hygiene and/or health. Usually crowded teeth will occur if there is no more room in your jaw to accommodate the growing teeth.
There is another reason for the class I malocclusion. It is due to widely spaced teeth. Quite contrary to the first one, here the condition is due to jawbone that continues to grow beyond its normal size. This may result in teeth shifting and there is lot of space created between teeth. These could lead to the so-called periodontal disease. Another reason is missing teeth which could be due loss of tooth/teeth through dental extraction accidental loss. The class I malocclusion can result poor dental hygiene and/or gum diseases.
Sometimes there could be misalignment of the upper and lower jaw that might result in what is called as crossbite. This condition will allow the upper teeth to bite inside of the lower teeth maybe in front or both sides of the mouth. In crossbite condition more wearing of the teeth, chance of gum diseases and loss of bone are frequented problems.
Overbite is a class II malocclusion. Its other term is overjet as what dental professionals call. This thing happens if the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth. According to study, there are many causes of overjet or overbite. It maybe due to hereditary reasons or over development of alveolar bone that supports the tooth.
Underbite is a class III malocclusion and this situation applies to lower teeth that protrude fast the front teeth. It's generally a result of undergrowth or overgrowth of both upper and lower jaw. Missing upper teeth is another cause. This condition can cause a hindrance to normal function of front teeth that can be resulting in tooth wear later on besides painful jaw and joint problems.
