Orthodontics - Some Considerations
Problems including crooked teeth, and spaces between teeth can do more harm than you probably ever know. First off, they dampen your self-esteem and self-confidence levels. They not only alter your facial appearance but are responsible for jaw dysfunction too. Teeth also would encounter excessive wear. The hygiene issues are anywhere there with mal-aligned teeth; like the food gets stuck in between the spaces and cleaning the teeth is always going to be a challenge under these circumstances.Orthodontics is a specialty in dentistry wherein the specialist tries to straighten the teeth (ortho means straight; dontics mean related to teeth) and tries on achieving a harmony between different parts such as teeth, jaws as well as the face. By aligning the teeth, he also restores healthy jaw functioning while of course rendering a more pleasing looks of face.
Orthodontics evolved a lot in the recent times and there are some latest techniques you can opt for: They include but not limited to the tooth-colored brackets, Invisaligns as well as the invisible lingual braces.
Tooth-colored braces or brackets: This is a new alternative to the metal braces. The brackets used here are ceramic based and they are for those who hate to sport the old metal mouth looks. The teeth are braced up with translucent brackets and white wires and these are hardly noticed by anyone.
Invisalign: This is another latest trend to adjust crooked teeth. As it sounds, these are invisible aligning braces. The technique uses fitting of series of aligners or braces that are transparent (made of thin transparent human-friendly plastic). They fit to teeth like invisible teeth guards. They are fit in a way that they can be removed during brushing and other related activities.
Lingual braces/appliances: The technique here is very different from the conventional labial braces. A brace is secured inside the mouth and on to the tooth’s inner surface. It’s an advanced way of straightening teeth, and a stranger does not know that you have had your teeth braced up. This technique enables one to be free of any while still undergoing the orthodontic treatment. However, not many experts are offering this technique as of now. The treatment time remains the same, though it depends on the amount of curvature required to achieve. Say a minimum time of 180 days to 600 days is called for this orthodontic treatment.
Who are the candidates for orthodontic treatments?
Surprisingly, there is no age limit for these aforementioned techniques; however, it might be difficult to administer these treatment techniques for children for the simple reason that all of their teeth may not have erupted fully. Again, if a person have very small teeth it becomes difficult to insert and secure the braces. Furthermore, a person suffering from unhealthy and/or infected gums and teeth will not qualify for these braces.
None of these techniques will be hurting badly. Having said so, just like ordinary braces, a person might experience some discomfort during the initial days. The dentist may prescribe some pain medications during this time and he might also apply some medical wax over the braces/brackets to make them more tongue friendly.
There would be a slurred speech during the initial days, but you need to know that it’s only for a little while. It improves once the mouth accepts the braces. Additionally, when you are with braces, take more time to maintain oral hygiene, and visit dentist to get expert cleaning once in a while.
