Recession Cuts Back on Use of Dental Braces

The recession that’s looming on the horizon, and the economic downturn that has been going on for a while now has had a negative impact on the way people choose to access health care. Across the country, there are disturbing reports that lost jobs and salary cuts are forcing some people to give up payments on their health insurance, losing their health cover altogether.

Non-emergency treatments and procedure are the first to be affected when times go bad. Among the procedures people are now cutting down on are dental braces. Not all children's health insurance plans cover orthodontic treatment. For a long time now, orthodontists have complained about the cap for orthodontic cover or dental cover at a deductible of approximately $1,000.

Across the country, many children are now facing the prospect of having to postpone getting braces till their parent's financial situation improves. Some parts of the country had been more severely affected by the recession than others.  In smaller towns, especially those that have seen businesses and factories fold up in recent months with thousands of job losses, parents are finding it hard to pay for their children's dental braces. The cost of orthodontic braces is between $2,000 & 6,000. Even if you do have health insurance, most plans won't cover the entire bill.

Some parents however are making sacrifices in their own lives, postponing purchase of a new car or some other luxury to pay for the cost of the braces. Others are simple not as lucky. As cutbacks are imminent at many firms across the country, employers are projecting passing down increasing health insurance costs on their employees. This places an even bigger strain on the employees who prefer to stop making payments altogether. In challenging times likes these, orthodontists admit that there is a steady decline in business, and many dentists will tell you that they have lost business to the tune of up to 6%.

For parents who want to avoid dental braces for their children, there are steps they can take to prevent the need for orthodontic treatment. If you can, pull out any loose baby teeth on our own. If the baby tooth is lost before time, take the child to the dentist, and ask him to place something in the gap, so that the vacant space is maintained to facilitate the emergence of the permanent tooth. When the baby tooth is lost prematurely, it can become easy for neighboring teeth to move into the vacant space, leading to the misalignment of the teeth. This is one of the major reasons why orthodontic treatment becomes necessary. Make sure that your child eats a healthy diet, and have proper safety mechanisms in place at home to prevent accidents that may knock out teeth.

If your child has been diagnosed with the need for orthodontic treatment, visit your orthodontist, and ask if he has a payment plan that can help you make payments on a schedule basis. This can help take the presure off you a little.
