Remedies for Tooth Abscess

A tooth abscess can occur in any person at any age. This painful condition is often the result of improper and careless dental hygiene.  A permanent cure for a tooth abscess will require dental treatment at some point, but in the meantime, you can take steps to sooth the inflammation and control the nagging pain.

Here are some excellent quick remedies that you can use to treat the discomfort.

Cleanse the affected area with baking soda and salt.  These ingredients are readily available in your kitchen.  Just mix half a spoon of cooking salt with half a spoon of baking soda. Take equal quantities of both ingredients. Then take a wet cotton ball and dip it in the salt and baking soda mixture. Place this cotton ball in between the troublesome abscessed tooth and your cheek. Keep it for several hours, and keep the cotton ball moist by dipping it in the moisture several times. This remedy is also an excellent way to deal with the foul tasting pus that can ooze out into the mouth from an abscess.

Tooth abscesses are caused by an infection and to treat it, you must remove the source of the abscess or the infection. Place a dry tea bag in the area to drain the pus and soothe the inflammation.  You can even use the tea bag therapy as you sleep – simply place a tea bag inside your mouth. The placement has to be in a manner that keeps the tea bag in contact with the abscessed tooth.  The tea bag will help to drain pus and reduce swelling.

You can also help the pus to drain out by pressing it lightly with your tongue. However, pushing your tongue too hard against the abscess can cause the infection to spread.

An ice pack can also help reduce the swelling of an abscessed tooth and also ensures that the infection does not spread. Press gently, and for a few seconds at a time.
Use a home-made mouthwash – mix one fourth tablespoon of potassium carbonate in half a glass of water. Rinse your mouth with this mouthwash a few times every day. Potassium carbonate is easily available at your drug store.

Take Vitamin C supplements twice a day.  These strengthen your immune system and help fight the kind of infections that result in an abscess.  But make sure each Vitamin C tablet that you take is of at least 1000 mg.
Drink lots of plain water. At the first sign of a tooth abscess, drink 2-3 glasses of water, and then continue for every 20 minutes or so.  This doesn't seem to work that well if the abscess has become more severe and painfully inflamed.

Was your mouth with tea tree oil mixed with some water.

Swish your mouth with hydrogen peroxide 1.5%.

Try garlic therapy. Take 3-4 capsules of garlic for a period of five days. Garlic pods are an effective antibiotic.

As soon as you can, visit the dentist for long term treatment of your tooth abscess.
