Remedy for Bleeding Gums

Healthy gums are an important part of overall dental hygiene. One of the most frequent problems with gums is gingivitis.

Gingivitis is characterized by swollen, inflamed or bleeding gums.  This condition is caused by a white sticky deposit on the teeth called plaque.   If the plaque is ignored, then it can eventual harden into calculus, which is even harder to remove.

If the problem of bleeding gums is because of plaque and is not too serious, then a chlorhexidine-containing mouth rinse can be sufficient to treat the problem. . You must however not use the mouthwash for over a month, because it could leave the teeth with brownish stains.

Also, check if the gingivitis is caused by any dietary deficiencies. Deficiency of vitamin C can cause bleeding gums. So, make sure your diet includes some sources of Vitamin C and take at least 300mg per day. Citrus fruits and tomatoes are rich sources of vitamin C. In addition, your diet must contain more of whole grains like wheat, oats, veggies and fruits. Cut saturated fats from your diet. Take calcium supplements to boost your calcium intake. A coenzyme Q10 deficiency can also cause gingivitis. Ask your dentist to prescribe you some supplements.

There are also a lot of effective home remedies that can cure bleeding gums. One of the most effective herbal remedies is tea tree oil. Just put a few drops into the toothpaste after you squeeze some out onto your toothbrush. It helps in both curing the bleeding gums, and preventing gingivitis from occurring. You can also make an effective mouthwash by mixing a drop each of geranium, lemon and tea tree oil in half a glass of water. Don't swallow this mixture, though.

Also, a solution containing 0.1% of folic acid can be useful for bleeding gums. This must however, be used only as a rinse.

You can also find readymade mouthwashes at the supermarket. Choose one that contains peppermint oil, sage oil, caraway oil, menthol, chamomile tincture or clove oil, because these are excellent ingredients to cure problematic gums. Using toothpaste that contains a few of these herbs can also help treat the problem.

Drink green tea.

Rinse your mouth with a warm saline solution.

If none of these work, visit your dentist. He will get to the root of the problem by cleaning the plaque deposits from the teeth, thus preventing the infection from spreading further.

Once your gums have stopped bleeding, it is important to prevent any recurrence of gingivitis.  Brush and floss regularly, use an anti bacterial toothpaste, and rinse with an antibacterial rinse.
