Removing Braces
At often times an adult wearing braces may want to have them removed just for an event such as a wedding. In these cases your orthodontist hates to do this but will oblige if he/she feels it won’t disrupt your treatment. In most cases we have found that those looking to remove the braces for pictures or photos of a big event are making a big mistake. If you are far into your treatment with metal braces, the bond to the tooth is very strong and allows for your orthodontist to use powerchains and other methods of moving your teeth. To use these methods the bond to the tooth must be strong and usually takes month before the Orthodontist is confident the brackets are secure.
If you remove your braces, you are adding several months to your treatment. The braces will have to be bonded back to the tooth and allow several weeks/months before the powerchains can be utilized in major movement.
Overall, we highly recommend that you keep your braces on for the event. You will find it is not a big deal and you will look back on the pictures and enjoy. If you are that worried about how the pictures will come out, you can always not smile with your teeth, although that is rather silly.
The option of getting lingual braces or braces behind the tooth may be a good one if you are worried about upcoming events in your life.
Wear your braces proudly and remember change is a good thing and self improvement is even better.
