Smoking and Invisalign Braces
While using Invisalign braces, your orthodontist will recommend you do not smoke with the aligners in your mouth. Smoking causes a number of problems for you teeth. The most common issues to your teeth include periodontal disease. When going through orthodontic treatment, anything that can delay the teeth from moving due to blood flow to the gums being blocked is a real setback. Smoking and other drugs have been said to block the blood flow to the cells. Orthodontist have spoken and commented on articles that patients that are heavy smokers generally see far slow moving progress compared to non smokers. For the fastest braces treatment, you need to consult your orthodontist.
While using Invisalign, you could be staining your retainers and staining your teeth at the same time. You do not want to put something into your mouth that is not healthy for your teeth such as a smoke in cased retainer.
If you are working on getting your teeth straightened than we think this is a good time in your life to work on cutting the habit of smoking. At the very least slowing down to where you don’t need to smoke while having the retainers in your mouth. If the habit is too hard to break, you may want to try to set a schedule to wear you can only smoke after/before a meal. This way your aligners are already out and won’t be affected.
We highly recommend you work with a professional to dump the habit of smoking. There are many treatments available to you and with any form of braces treatment it is very important that you wear the retainers, braces, aligners, etc all day or as often as possible.
