Teeth Extractions For Braces Treatment
In many cases for adults with braces, tooth extractions are necessary. When an adult has too much crowding there is only so much that can be done with braces and appliances. By removing teeth, the orthodontist will have room to bring other teeth into their proper position. While this procedure is much more common with adults because their growth has come to an end, the treatment is also available and recommended for children with extreme crowding. In many cases orthodontist will try to use braces and available appliances for children before recommending them to an oral surgery for extraction. An orthodontist can usually tell if he/she will need to the extraction within the first year of treatment and usually it is not time wasted.
You will be referred to an oral surgery, the same that are responsible for wisdom teeth extraction. Getting your wisdom teeth out is a far more complex procedure and usually involved more pain afterwards. Getting teeth such as your bicuspids out is usually much easier and does not involve as much pain afterwards. Post surgery you will usually be given pain killers and swapped to avoid infection in the pocket of where the tooth was.
The cost for tooth extraction varies from each surgeon, but a common and average cost is about $300-$400 per tooth. This includes everything for the entire procedure. Dental insurance usually does not cover this cost as it is deemed cosmetic. Same goes for wisdom teeth unless you can prove it is causing severe problems. In our experience insurance companies don’t give much thought about the process and going back and forth with them can be frustrating. This is why we recommend you ask the company about all these little benefits before signing up with a plan.
Once the extraction is completed a game plan is sought out by your doctor. The orthodontist will start to work around the pocket and pull teeth into their correct place. The rest of the braces treatment rolls out as normal and you will see results each adjustment. Crowded teeth treatment can be a complex case, however traditional metal braces are designed and highly effective for the task at hand.
