Traditional Braces Didn’t Work

There are cases when a user has a mild to severe overbite or underbite, in which traditional braces alone may not work.  Not all orthodontist are versed in dealing with severe cases, so it is important you ask questions about your treatment.  Orthodontists that specialize in this will usually have before and after pictures available for you to see their work.

When an underbite is so severe there is only so much movement of the jaw that can be done with braces.  This is why sometimes the only options is to go through surgery and braces together.  

In the case when you decide to give braces only a try, there is a chance that the movement will not be enough.  However many patients report that getting to about 75% of their expected results is usually enough to be very happy with the treatment.

Just because the bite issue was not corrected, does not mean that you wasted treatment with braces.  Your doctor should keep in mind to prepare you for surgery or at least fix crooked teeth.  You can then consider surgery or decide to let your bite remain as is.  Patients that have been down this road, usually see vast improvements in the upper teeth and these are the teeth that majority show when smiling.  So they decide to leave the bite issue as is.

As always get several opinions from orthodontists in your area.  Usually the consultations do not cost much and with the several opinions you will become better educated about your teeth and the treatment you need to get.
