Use of Piezo Tool For Treating Dental Conditions
Piezo Surgery TechniqueWhile you might wonder what a Piezo surgery is a Piezo surgical instrument has been there for a long time in the hands of a precision-obsessed dental surgeon, carefully navigating through soft tissues of the mouth through the bone and treating a condition of the bone.
Why a Piezo Surgery?
A conventional dental surgeon uses scalpels, drills and burs to either cut, split or bore a hole through the bone. No matter how accurate a surgeon can be there is always tissue and/or bone loss along with blood loss. Piezo surgery instrument uses a technique that works on the principle of 3-dimensional ultrasound effect. The technique uses modulated frequencies of ultrasound waves in surgical procedures means it results in minimally invasion whether it is osteotomies or osteoplasties (opening and repair of an otherwise infected bone) and/or tooth extractions. Quite similar to a laser the ultrasound waves also give very good accuracy and it reduces the healing time to a great extent. The tool sends low frequency sound waves as micro vibrations through different tips (depend on where it is intended). This is the reason why the conventional invasive effects are not seen here.
Piezo surgery technique or Piezo tool is a result of exhaustive years of research by an Italian dental surgeon Tomaso Vercellotti.
Areas where Piezo technique can be used
There can be several applications of the Piezo technique such as tooth extractions, periodontal surgeries, implant area improvement and implant surgeries, endodontic surgeries, etc.
Several types of harvesting of autogenous bone blocks and bone splitting can be performed using the Piezo technique.
Nerve repositioning is another area of Piezo application.
Benefits of using a Piezo Surgery technique
• Very accurate that, the technique enables to cut only the hard tissues and the surrounding tissues including arteries sinus membranes and nerves are almost untouched, thereby very little damage to these tissues.
• Very safe and results in minimum trauma relative to the conventional drills and scalpels. The surgery results in minimal bleeding. There is also minimal swelling and patient experiences little post-operative discomfort or pain.
• The technique has different programs and based on the need (to cut a small block for grafting needs or for lifting antral sinus with minimal to no perforations or to predict a split ridge) the surgeon can program it.
• The different tips for extraction, for instance, enable a surgeon to make even difficult extractions simple while resulting in no fractures of the bone.
• Allows a surgeon to perform a procedure in a comfortable position. For instance an atraumatic extraction of impacted canine is possible through a labio-palatal position and it is otherwise not so easily possible via conventional techniques.
Heat generation is a common complaint by doctors using the piezo surgery device that might be responsible for cell and tissue necrosis. But proper usage of the device and maintaining irrigation temperature at the desired level is recommended.
Since the instrument is selective as well as accurate, it can be applied to all areas of complicated and otherwise most difficult oral surgeries and also interdisciplinary surgeries (facial trauma situations).
There are several Peizo surgery devices available in the market.
