Dental crowns are a kind of dental repair which, when fixed into place, completely covers the part of a tooth that is present at and above the gum line. It is a tooth shaped "cap" which is placed over a tooth. A dental crown is used for covering the tooth to restore its size and shape, strength, or to enhance its appearance.

During your first visit the dentist may perform the following procedures

1. The dentist will numb your tooth.

2. He will then shape your tooth.

3. He will create an impression of your tooth.

4. He will make a temporary dental crown for your tooth.

5. He will then select the correct shade of porcelain required for your dental crown.


During your second visit your dentist would cement the permanent crown in place.

How long does a dental crown last?

Usually dental crowns last for about 5 to 15 years on an average. The dental crown’s life span depends on the extent of wear and tear to which the crown is exposed, and how good are your oral hygiene practices and your personal habits related to mouth.

What special care does a crowned tooth need?

Usually a crowned tooth does not need any special care but you should bear in mind that just because your tooth is crowned it does not necessarily mean that the tooth lying beneath is guarded from gum disease or decay. Hence you should continue to follow proper oral hygiene practices such as brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day, particularly around the crown area where the tooth meets the gum. You have to avoid habits such as clenching or grinding your teeth, biting fingernails, chewing ice and opening packages using your teeth.

How much do dental crowns cost?

Costs differ based on which part of the country you reside in and the kind of crown you choose. For instance, porcelain crowns are usually cost more than gold crowns, which in cost more than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Normally, cost of crowns can range from $500 - $900 or more per crown.
