Will Teeth Braces Cause Bone Loss?

Braces generally do not cause bone loss, however with that said it can be a factor to gum disease which leads to bone loss.  Bone loss can be attributed to advanced periodontal disease.   When wearing braces, your oral hygiene routine needs to be increases to prevent or contribute to unhealthy gums and teeth.  A oral routine that slacks while wearing braces will lead to gingivitis.

A dentist will examine your teeth and give you several treatment options to prevent bone loss and treat periodontal disease.  Gingivitis is usually the culprit and occurs in stages as it is the most common.  It is important to catch gingivitis early and treat the gum diseases which can lead to bone loss in the jaw.

Your oral cleansing routine with braces should become natural such as brushing after each meal and flossing with braces.  A toothbrush with fluoride is a big help, however your dentist may recommend a fluoride mouth wash or even a fluoride gel that will go in retainers that you may wear for several minutes.  An electric toothbrush such as the rota-dent is a big help when wearing braces too.

If you suspect you are having bone loss, than you need to see a periodontist right away to determine what the cause is and how to treat your gums.   Teeth braces work to shift your teeth slowly affecting the bone.  This is usually ok, however if your gums are not in good shape than you may worsen the bone loss.  You need to make sure that you see the dentist as normal throughout your braces treatment.
